How to Stop a Puppy or Dog from Jumping
Jumping is a normal dog behavior. Puppies jump when they greeting people, excited, to show affection, during play, and when displaying dominance. Dog owners tend to communicate that this behavior is acceptable by giving the puppy attention when he jumps on them. There is nothing cuter than a small puppy jumping into his owner’s arms. The problem is that the puppy doesn’t stay small for long. This attention getting technique is carried on through adulthood. Jumping on people can cause injury to a child or senior citizen. As dog owners, it is our responsibility to train our canines not to jump on people.
Teaching a dog not to jump in 3 easy steps:
1. When the dog or puppy jumps up, turn around and walk away.
2. Totally ignore the dog or puppy. Make no eye contact, no verbal interactions, and no touching.
3. When all four paws are on the floor, give attention, praise, and treats.
Other tricks that will help you teach a dog or puppy not to jump:
· Teach the dog or puppy how to sit and use the command when the dog starts to jump.
· Use positive reinforcement for non-jumping behavior. Use lots of praise, petting, and treats.
· Be consistent. Everyone in the household must participate.
· Use a leash when guest visit your home until the puppy or dog is fully trained.
· Do not make a big deal when you come home. This is one time when puppies and dogs get very excited and tend to jump.
· Explain to visitors that they are to totally ignore the dog or puppy until all four paws are on the floor.
Do Not:
· Punish, yell at, scold, or discipline a dog or puppy for jumping. This does not take care of the problem but makes it worse and causes distrust.
· Push the dog or puppy off. He will see this as playing.
· Step on the dog’s or puppy’s toes. This causes pain and confuses the canine.
With consistency, patience, and the right tools, your dog will learn not to jump up on people. It will take time, it won’t happen over night.
